Have you heard? Sitting is the new smoking!
It’s not just about incorporating structured exercise into your day, it’s about incorporating activity and movement all throughout the day.
A large component of health is your amount of NonExercise Activity Thermogenesis (NEAT; activity you perform during a day that is not considered “exercise”).
It can be the difference between the rate of weight gain. Researchers have shown that (on average) an obese individual will burn up to 350 less than a lean person, entirely due to sitting for 2.5 hours more during the day. It is also considered in some circles as the largest component to weight gain we get older. We tend to sit more and move less the older we get.
Sitting too much throughout the day also impacts our health. Studies have linked sitting too much with an increase in developing heart disease, diabetes, and prostate and breast cancer. This is regardless of your structured exercise you may do during the day.
It’s not enough to just add in an exercise session during your day. Instead also focus on adding movement and activity throughout your day.
